Parents' expectations: pressure or the launch pad for a child's development?
It is inevitable that “being parents” is a meaningful “job” since it is the journey that parents take to both raise their children and perfect themselves. Children are the continuation of their parents; hence, expectations and orientations always exist in the growing paths of the children. But have you ever wondered if those “expectations” are the launch pads or the pressures upon the child’s development? How can parents balance their dreams and the child’s potential? In the context of globalization, parents surely struggle to find the answer to those concerns.

According to Paul Tough (the author of ‘How Children Succeed’), it is crucial to teach children soft skills rather than enhance their IQ scale when aiming for a successful future. Along with social development, parents nowadays have a greater awareness of the need to care more about their child’s soft skills; however, in fact, grades or academic achievements are indeed significant accomplishments that parents expect their children to fulfill. As stated in the “Global Talent Trends 2019” report on LinkedIn, more than 90% of managers believe that soft skills like problem solving, cooperation, and leadership will emerge as critical skills in the future.
The journey to be a global citizen - What do children need to prepare?
The world is “globalizing” with rapid changes, providing children with a chance to enter the world to experience it and become lifelong learners. An elite global citizen not only possesses English skills and technological possibilities but also needs to be equipped and trained in the needed competencies and mindset to conquer and stay positive in a future with changes.
Drawing on in-depth research and the current context, the Global Skills Project of the Oxford International Curriculum is being implemented at UTS, focusing on four main skills that aim to let students realize their potential through creative approaches to solving problems, sharing ideas, and coordinating teamwork.
The program is developed upon the Project-Based Learning method with the belief that all students can learn, grow, and be encouraged to become creative and brave life-long learners who are eager to tackle challenges and get self-evaluation for sustainable development.
Raising Kids: Balancing Love and Expectations - Being Parents of a Global Citizen, Is It Hard?
The seminar “Raising Kids: Balancing Love and Expectations” specialized for parents is hosted by US Vietnam Talent International School with the participation of Mrs. Tu Anh Nguyen, a Ph.D. student in Psychology, Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health and Development, a Parent Counselor, Founder of the Happy Parenting project, and the author of the “Làm Mẹ Rất Vui” & “Hiểu Con Để Dạy Con Tích Cực” books and Mr. William Aurthur Klepacki Jr – Deputy Head, International Program at UTS. By participating in this seminar, families will listen to experts’ perspectives on the appropriate and latest parenting methods for raising our children, along with unique interactive activities for parents.
Parents ask – Experts answer: Parents will discuss and get answers around the topic of raising children to be “global citizens”. Moreover, parents will be provided with tips and techniques to guide their children towards success and sustainable happiness.
A day as a OIC student: What do children enjoy learning at UTS? How do UTS teachers convey knowledge in class? All concerns will be addressed when parents can act as students throughout the interactive activity organized by our experts. Nevertheless, parents can get to know the secrets for fun activities that can be applied at home to enhance the bond between family and child’s learning journey.
